	ALCOHOL AKA: Booze, 'the bottle', drink, liquor, juice, sauce. APPEARANCE: Alcohol (technically ethyl alcohol, or ethanol) is produced by fermenting or distilling various fruits, vegetables, or grains and is widely available from shops and stores in bottles, cans etc. METHOD: consumed orally. EFFECTS: Flushed skin, impaired judgment, decreased inhibitions, loss of muscular coordination, slurred speech, memory and comprehension loss. LOOK OUT FOR: Alcohol abuse leading to significant social, occupational, medical impairment, possibly leading to alcohol tolerance due to increased amounts of alcohol required to achieve intoxication. Withdrawal symptoms which develop after a reduction in heavy or prolonged alcohol use: Sweating or Rapid Pulse Increased Hand Tremor Insomnia Nausea or Vomiting Physical Agitation Anxiety Transient Visual, Tactile or Auditory Hallucinations or Illusions Grand Mal Seizures
	AMPHETAMINES AKA: Speed, billy, whiz, ice, sulphate, dexys, uppers. APPEARANCE: White, grey, pink or yellow powder, or tablets or ampoule. METHOD: Taken orally,sniffed or injected after being dissolved in a liquid. EFFECTS: Increased alertness, pulse rate, blood pressure and feeling of high energy. LOOK OUT FOR: Large pupils, insomnia, loss of appetite and weight, irritability, depression, injecting equipment.
	CANNABIS AKA: Blow, wacky backy, ganja, dope, hash, grass, pot. APPEARANCE: Hard brown or black resin material. METHOD: Smoked in hand rolled cigarettes or in pipes. EFFECTS Euphoria, relaxed inhibitions, hilarity. LOOK OUT FOR: Increased appetite, glazed eyes with large pupils. Distinctive herbal smell, cigarette papers.
	COCAINE AKA: Coke, Charlie, snow. APPEARANCE: White powder. METHOD: Sniffed or in extreme cases injected after first being dissolved in a liquid. EFFECTS: Increased alertness, pulse rate, blood pressure and a false sense of high energy and euphoria. LOOK OUT FOR: Nervousness, irritability, loss of appetite and weight. Prolonged periods of sleep after binges. Sniffing, using a mirror and razor blade to make the "lines" of powder and a tube to inhale through the nose.
	CRACK COCAINE AKA: rock. APPEARANCE: White or dark cream 'rock' crystals in various sizes. METHOD: Smoked in pipes or in extreme cases injected after first being dissolved in a liquid. EFFECTS: Increased alertness, pulse rate, blood pressure and a false sense of high energy and euphoria. LOOK OUT FOR: Nervousness, irritability, loss of appetite and weight. Prolonged periods of sleep after binges. Drug often smoked in makeshift pipes made from drinks cans or plastic bottles.
	ECSTASY AKA: E, XTC, Adams, Love/White Doves, apples, disco burgers/biscuits. APPEARANCE: In various coloured and shaped tablets, with indented motifs, the most popular being a 'dove'. METHOD: Taken orally. EFFECTS: Increase in energy and a heightened perception of colour and sound. Some mild hallucinogenic effects. LOOK OUT FOR: Lack of co-ordination, anxious or confused state, paranoia and insomnia. Often associated with the dance scene.
	HEROIN AKA: Brown, smack, H, scag, dragon, junk. APPEARANCE: White powder in it's pure form, but colour varies through pink, grey or brown when produced for street use. METHOD: Can be taken orally, by sniffing, smoking or injecting after being mixed with a liquid. EFFECTS: Feeling of well-being and drowsiness. Some nausea and vomiting. LOOK OUT FOR: Injection marks and equipment, burned pieces of silver foil or burned spoon.
	L.S.D. ACID TABS AKA: Trips, acid, tabs, microdot. APPEARANCE: Tablet or capsule form but, more commonly impregnated onto paper 'tabs', with cartoon characters or symbols. METHOD: Taken orally. EFFECTS: Hallucinations and a heightened awareness of colours sound and sight. LOOK OUT FOR: Glazed eyes, over excitement and irrational behavior. Flashbacks and confusion.
	INHALENTS, SOLVENTS and GLUE AKA: Sniffing, doing gas, biffing. APPEARANCE: Items include glue, aerosols, butane gas, correcting fluid, household products, paint, polish etc. METHOD: Inhaled from plastic/crisp bag/cloth, squirted directly into mouth. EFFECTS: Similar to alcohol: dizziness, euphoria, hallucinations, drowsiness. LOOK OUT FOR: Glazed/red eyes, Spots around mouth and nose, LIngering smell.
	MAGIC MUSHROOMS AKA: Shrooms, mushies, liberty caps. APPEARANCE: Small bullet-shaped wild mushrooms (easily confused with other species which may be poisonous). METHOD: Eaten raw, cooked, infused, dried for later consumption. EFFECTS: Euphoria, hilarity and confidence, greater awareness of sight and sound. LOOK OUT FOR: Feeling and being sick, Stomach pains, Bad ‘trip’, Fear, Paranoia, Flashbacks, Poisoning (which could lead to death.
	MEDICINES AKA: Scripts, OTC's. APPEARANCE: Can be in tablet, powder or liquid form, in many various colours and containers. Either prescripted or 'over the counter'. METHOD: Taken orally, injected or absorbed through the skin. EFFECTS: Normally taken to control and cure illnesses. Can be mis-used to create a wide variance of effects. LOOK OUT FOR: Tablets and bottles, injection equipment and mood changes with incorrect use.
	TOBACCO AKA: fags, ciggies, smokes APPEARANCE: Tobacco is the dried leaves of the plant Nicotiana Tabacum, Nicotiana Rustica and Nicotiana Persica. METHOD: Chewed, sniffed in snuff form and smoked. EFFECTS: Tobacco contains the drug 'nicotine' which has a complex effect on the brain's activity. LOOK OUT FOR: Discoloured fingers, smell on clothes and some first time users can suffer a feeling of nausea, dizziness vomiting.
